Local Changemakers Podcast: A Conversation with Nancy Flinchbaugh on Justice, Faith, and Environmental Advocacy

The Local Changemakers Podcast officially launches with an inspiring first episode featuring Nancy Finchbaugh, an author, spiritual guide, and community leader from Springfield, Ohio. Hosted by Miguelito Jerome, this engaging conversation dives deep into Nancy’s lifelong dedication to justice, environmental advocacy, and faith-driven action.

A Life Devoted to Change

Nancy Flinchbaugh’s journey is one of purpose. She has dedicated her life to serving both God and the community. As a former Fair Housing and Mediation Coordinator for the City of Springfield, she played a pivotal role in promoting fair housing, intercultural understanding, and peace-building initiatives. Even after retirement, her passion for advocacy remains unwavering.

Her work at the City included helping launch CultureFest, an annual event celebrating diversity, as well as coordinating the Global Education and Peace Network, which fostered cross-cultural understanding. But her mission extends beyond policies and programs—she has also made a significant impact through writing.

Writing as a Tool for Advocacy and Spiritual Growth

Nancy’s literary journey began unexpectedly. It was during a retreat with friends when she first recognized her calling as a writer. Encouraged to embrace her gift, she embarked on a path that led to the creation of several books that explore themes of justice, faith, and environmental stewardship.

Her debut novel, Revelation in the Cave, was an attempt to explore the message of peace and Christian faith in a world of conflict. She continued with books such as Revelation at the Labyrinth and Letters from the Earth, where she integrates spiritual reflection with pressing social and environmental issues.

Nancy describes writing as a spiritual practice, one that allows her to reflect on God’s role in her life and in the world. Through her books, she seeks to plant seeds of hope and inspire others to take action—a concept symbolized by her love for sunflowers, which she sees as a metaphor for growth, resilience, and spreading positivity.

Faith and Climate Justice: The Intersection of Belief and Action

A significant portion of Nancy’s work is dedicated to addressing climate change and environmental justice. She actively participates in organizations like the Citizens Climate Lobby, advocating for sustainable energy solutions and policies that protect the planet.

In her book Letters from the Earth, Nancy presents a unique approach to environmental awareness by sharing “letters” she believes are inspired by the Earth itself. This reflective process has helped her deepen her commitment to climate action and educating others on the urgent need for sustainable living.

Nancy highlights the importance of local action, encouraging communities like Springfield to embrace renewable energy and sustainable practices. She believes that even small efforts, such as solar energy initiatives and community-based environmental programs, can lead to significant change.

Building Bridges Across Cultures

Beyond environmental advocacy, Nancy has also been a strong supporter of racial justice and immigrant integration. She recalls how her early exposure to racial injustice in Detroit during college deeply influenced her commitment to peacemaking and social equity.

When asked about the best way for immigrants to integrate into American society, Nancy emphasizes volunteering, community engagement, and interfaith collaboration. She believes that involvement in local organizations, churches, and social initiatives is key to building meaningful connections and fostering a sense of belonging.

Mariah of the Wind: Love, Nature, and the Human Spirit

During the podcast, Nancy shares insights about her latest novel, Mariah of the Wind. Written during the COVID-19 pandemic, the novel explores the beauty of the Earth, Native American wisdom, and the challenges posed by the fossil fuel industry.

Described as an “environmental romance,” the novel follows Mariah, a young woman deeply connected to nature, and her relationship with Max, a scientist working in the renewable energy sector. Through this story, Nancy not only weaves a compelling love story but also sheds light on the urgent need for environmental consciousness and action.

Advice for Aspiring Writers and Change-Makers

Balancing her roles as a writer, activist, and spiritual leader is no easy feat. Nancy attributes her productivity to daily discipline, spiritual meditation, and maintaining a strong sense of purpose.

For those aspiring to write or make an impact in their communities, Nancy offers simple yet powerful advice:

  • Set clear goals – Define what you want to achieve and take small, consistent steps towards it.
  • Discipline is key – Write, engage, and work on your craft daily.
  • Never underestimate the power of a small group – Change always begins with committed individuals working together.
  • Find a mentor or coach – Having someone to guide and challenge you can be a game-changer.

Looking Ahead: Future Projects and Aspirations

Nancy’s future is as active as her past. She is currently working on a trilogy exploring African, European, and Indigenous American cultural roots. Her upcoming novel, Revelation on the Sea Island, to be released very soon, delves into the legacy of African American/Gullah culture and its deep-rooted influence on American society.

She continues to engage with the community, working on interfaith collaborations, climate action, and mentoring young leaders. Even in retirement, she remains committed to fostering a better world.

Final Reflections: What Kind of Community Do We Want?

Towards the end of the interview, Nancy offers a thought-provoking question for the next guest of the Local Changemakers Podcast:
“What is your vision of an ideal community, and how are you working toward that vision?”

Her words serve as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in shaping the future. Whether through activism, writing, mentoring, or simply being engaged citizens, each of us has the capacity to make a difference.
